Let’s take a quick look back at the Week 17 NFL schedule. My game notes from Sunday as we close out the 2011 regular season and move on to the playoffs. Here are ten things to you should be talking about today...

1. Giants win the NFC East: Have to look at the Cowboys’ secondary play because it wasn’t good enough—again. Victor Cruz took a base Flat route (Curl-Flat combo) vs. Terrence Newman in man coverage for a 70-plus yard TD, plus the Giants' WRs won inside of the numbers, in the vertical game and on the goal line. Throw in the poor tackling (plus technique) from this secondary on top of their inability to play Cover 1 and there is a reason they are going home for the offseason. Eli Manning and the Giants are the better football team when you break it down.

Tim TebowICONThe Broncos still get the AFC West title, but need much more production from Tebow to beat the Steelers on Wild Card weekend.

2. Tebow, Broncos back into the playoffs: Denver is in the tournament after the Raiders loss to the Chargers, but there should be some concern with Tebow (6-22-60-1 INT) and this Broncos’ offense heading into the post season. Option football just isn’t going to get it done on Wild Card weekend when the Broncos host the Steelers. They need much more production from Tebow to have any shot to advance and he wasn’t accurate with the football or comfortable in the pocket for the second straight week in the loss to K.C.

3. Matt Flynn’s production—and future: Late season games can provide opportunities in multiple situations when backups get a chance to put their play on tape. And that’s exactly what we saw from Flynn vs. the Lions. The Packers’ No.2 QB (who is going to be a free agent this March) threw the entire route tree and finished with 480-yards to go along with 6 TDs against a team heading to the post season. Knowing how desperate NFL clubs are for talent at the QB position (think Kevin Kolb), look for Flynn to cash in this spring.

4. Saints keep rolling: The Saints might be playing the best football in the NFL right now and the numbers Drew Brees and this offense are putting up are ridiculous. To put it perspective, the Saints broke the all-time single season record for total yards (7,474) by passing the 2000 Rams. That was my rookie year in St. Louis and the best offense I have ever seen with Warner, Faulk, Bruce, Holt, etc. Eight wins in a row and a game plan that features TE Jimmy Graham and RB Darren Sproles to go along with Brees.

5. The Colts are on the clock: We are going to have plenty of time after the NFL scouting combine and in February and Andrew Luck’s Pro Day at Stanford to break down the QB heading into the draft. However, with the Colts’ loss to the Jags that locked up the No.1 overall pick, can you see any other scenario than Luck landing in Indy come April? The real story is finding out who will draft Baylor's Robert Griffin III...

to me the draft tells everything about the franchise. every one misses on picks once in a while. whenever some expert talks about taking the best available player or filling a team need, i kind of laugh. the right pick depends on the situation. as a redskins fan, I applauded last years draft. I love RGIII, but its not worth giving up multiple picks, they are thin on talent. I also don't think there's anyone out there who is worth a massive contract. Matt flynn has had a couple of promising games, but look at who is around him.

Luck, Kalil, griffin, glaiborne, Trent Richardson. Maybe RGIII will be there when the skins pick. if not, i'd like to see them pick up an o tackle--either Martin from Stanford or the kid from Iowa. don't think dre kirkpatrick is good value at 6, but think he ia helluva player. happy new years

Packer D looked awful once again. Looks like they will be one and done this year which is a shame because their offense sure looked good, even without Rodgers and Jennings playing and an O-line which is still struggling. Thompson needs to add some D pressure in the off season to help.

jackson - yeah, that was the most disappointing 15-1 season in history. must suck to be a packer fan, what with all that flawed winning. i'm sure the packers will be regarded as the most disappointing repeat super bowl winning team in nfl history.

The Lions got robbed on the touchdown catch which was ruled an incompletion. Agreed with the announcers that the league needs to get a system in place to get calls right. The former league offical, Mike Pereira, who now works for Fox Network and who previously ripped into Jon Gruden for not know the rules, lamely defended the league and said changing the current system would take the game out of the hands of the officials. Exactly what is needed since getting the calls right is what should be the goal, not the precious self esteem of a bunch of refs.

Jackson,
I'm not sure how much can be taken away from a game in which defensive starters were being held out. The first 15 games make the case that Green Bay is giving up too many yards (while still doing a very good job limiting points and creating turnovers), but yesterday's game really adds nothing of substance to the argument.

It makes me laugh when they refer to the single season sack record as the most sacks in a season EVER. Sacks have only been an official stat since 1982. There have been several pass rushers prior to '82 who were much more fearsome than Gastineau, Strahan or Allen. I read somewhere that David "Deacon" Jones once had 25 sacks in one season! Someone at NFL Films should start a major project; go back, review the footage, and compile a true all-time sacks list. I bet the numbers guys like Reggie White, Bruce Smith and L.T. put up would pale in comparison to some of the all-time great pass rushers.

Football Fan,
If u sacrifice the "precious self-esteem of a bunch of refs," it should be clear that officiating will only get worse. It should also be clear that if u take too much power (& the responsiblity that goes along with that power) out of the minds of the refs, their judgement & abilities will worsen. That's how the human mind works. People are either unaware of how that functions in their own minds, or they just routinely overlook it.

A perfect example of this is Matt Flynn yesterday. Inactivating Rodgers not only protects him, it says to Flynn "The game is in your hands, you are our man." Not at all the same thing as playing Rodgers for a series & then sending in "the backup." The wisdom level of the Packers organization is off the charts. They really know what they're doing with regard to team building & chemistry. So inspiring.

Ted Thompson will go defense heavy in the '12 draft, that's obvious. Wynn & Wilson are backups although I think that Wilson could be a solid starter in time. Howard Green has been a no-show on the field, is old & just a guy after a fairly good 2nd half of the '10 season. Mike Neal & Lawrence Guy are young & have been injured, the jury is still out on them. The only legit players on the defensive line are Pickett & raji. Pickett is long in the tooth but he's still very good @ stopping the run. The DL has supplied little pass-rush which has hurt the defense although that's not their main job. The DL needs major upgrading, I can see GB going after 2 3 techniques/DE, w/1 being taken in the 1st 2-3 rounds.

Hawk & Bishop can't cover & Hawk is immune to making any big plays while the OLB spot opposite CM3 is still unresolved. Walden hasn't been the same since he was arrested & can't hold the point on the outside v. the run. Zombo is ok but has been very injury prone. D.J. Smith has shown promise but is undersized. He could be a poor man's Sam Mills if he reaches his potential. Francois did show flashes & had 2 INT's but he's young & doesn't seem to be starter material. So'oto had a very good exhibition season as a pass-rusher & has potenital but is very raw, while Brad Jones has regressed after showing promise as a rookie. Hawk should be looking over his shoulder & a pass-rushing OLB will be drafted in the top 3 rounds.

Woodson is still very good, has about 2 years left but he's clearly lost a step or 2. He still has a knack for big plays & is a valuable leader. Tramon Williams & Sam Shields had down years which has been contributed to the lack of pass-rush & the loss of Collins. Burnett had a fairly decent 2nd season but it was obvious that the lack of an off-season had hurt his progression. He looks like he'll be a good pro w/big play potential. Although Shields is only in his 2nd year, he has a lot of upside but like Burnett & the other young players, the lack of an off-season has cost him. Patrick Lee has had 2 ACL injuries in his 1st 2 seasons so his 4.41 speed is a memory. Other than the recent Detroit game, he's done pretty well on special teams & holds his own as a dime-back. Devon House has very good size & speed but is raw. He'll see more time in his 2nd year. Peprah is a solid backup but can be replaced. GB will probably draft a CB & possibly a FS in the middle rounds.

On offense, GB will probably draft a QB, Wr, C & maybe a T. I think that GB has 10 picks as of now.

GB will probably go to the Super Bowl although the lack of defense still worries me. If they can still create turnovers, they should be fine.

Giants beat the Packers at Lambeau - unless of course the Packers continue to get the hometown officiating they have been enjoying which was evident vs. the Lions this past week.
