Jets wide receiver suspended for violating substance-abuse policy Aaron Wilson
Newly-minted New York Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes has been suspended for the opening four games of the regular season for violating the league's substance-abuse policy, the NFL announced.
The suspension, which was first reported by Pro Football Talk, means that another infraction would trigger a season-long suspension for Holmes, who was traded by the Pittsburgh Steelers to the Jets on Sunday night for a fifth-round draft pick.
Under NFL rules governing suspended players, Holmes will be allowed to participate in offseason activities like minicamps, workouts as well as training camp and preseason games.
However, he will be suspended without pay for the opening four games of the regular season and won't be allowed to be at the Jets' team headquarters.
Holmes is being investigated for allegedly throwing a glass at a woman at an Orlando, Fla., nightclub, but has denied any wrongdoing and a witness is claiming responsibility for throwing the glass.
Holmes, who has admitted to selling drugs during his youth, has previously been charged with domestic violence and possession of marijuana.
He was suspended for one game by the Steelers for his arrest on possesion of marijuana. The domestic violence charge was thrown out.
