ORLANDO, Fla. -- The NFL has awarded 32 compensatory selections for this year's draft with the picks awarded to 19 different teams, the league announced today at the annual league meetings.
The rules governing compensatory selections gives teams compensatory picks when it loses more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires during the previous league year.
The picks range between the third and the seventh round.
And the NFL management council uses a formula derived from salary, playing time and postseason awards.
The NFL announced that three teams, the Oakland Raiders, Miami Dolphins and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, were given a compensatory pick even though they didn't incur a net loss of compensatory free agents.
Under the formula, the compensatory free agents lost by these clubs were ranked higher than the ones they signed (by a specified point differential based upon salary and performance).
