NFL 'exploring all options' for site of 2013 Pro Bowl

Game could leave Hawaii Brad Biggs

The NFL could be headed out of Hawaii with the Pro Bowl again.

The league is considering a handful of options for the all-star game in 2013, and Mike Triplett of the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that the Superdome is one possibility as New Orleans is also the host of Super Bowl XLVII.

The NFL experimented with having the Pro Bowl at the host site for the Super Bowl in 2010 in South Florida. It’s not a popular choice for players, but the league might not be going back to Honolulu.

“We are exploring all options," league spokesman Brian McCarthy told Triplett.

At issue in Hawaii is believed to be a payment of $4 million the state makes to the NFL to play the game there. With a struggling economy, government leaders might not be willing to fork over that kind of pay day to the NFL, and logistically it works far better for the league if the Pro Bowl and Super Bowl, on back-to-back weekends, is at the same site.

Per Triplett, sites like Los Angeles and Orlando could also be in the mix.

The NFL has played every Pro Bowl since 1980 in Hawaii except for the one two years ago. Good luck getting players enthusiastic about the game if it’s not in Honolulu.

"Good luck getting players enthusiastic about the game if it’s not in Honolulu."

Good luck getting the fans to care about it if it continues to deteriorate into a flag football show.

If the players don't want to play hard because of injury potential, that's okay. Just don't tell fans that the Pro Bowl is actually a game to taken seriously.

Most of these guys make a lot of money and can afford to go to Hawaii any time they want in the offseason.

I think it should be a flag football game, due to the potential for injury. No helmets, tees and shorts. Let them carry cans of beer on the field if they like. A lot of guys could relate to that.

Or let them play softball.

I could relate to that a lot more than the current game, which I couldn't care less about and never watch.

Maybe that is the game they should take to England and not short change fans a home game

Mack I totally agree with you. This is absolutely the game for people who aren't really interested in rooting for one team specifically to beat another but rather just watching a football like substance played by guys whose names they've heard of.

Now if you are trying to grow a base of actual football fans in other places this wouldn't work for any extended period of time. Maybe they could host some preseason games over there?

Another issue not mentioned is the facility in Hawai'i. Aloha Stadium is falling apart and the state isn't able to rebuild. There aren't very many more years for the old rustbucket.

Because the players are SO enthusiastic about the games that actually ARE in Honolulu... It makes far more sense to play it in the host city the week before the Super Bowl as was tried a couple of years ago. Personally, I much prefer the idea of a skills competition instead of a half-assed football game with half of the players being reserve selections.

As a former Hawaii resident, I'd love to see the game stay there. It means so much to the people and the economy there.

And Pack Man, I agree that Aloha Stadium is falling apart. The state isn't able to rebuild because one of the problems is that there isn't anywhere to build a new stadium.

I like Bill Bates's idea of skills competition. The QBs could throw balls through swinging tires, the WRs could do TD dunks over the crossbars, returnes would have to avoid trap doors, and Jerome Harrison could go helmet to head on anyone he wants - other players, the fans, Roger Goodell. Ha!

I'd watch that.

They used to have a skills competition. I remember seeing Dan Marino come back from behind to win the QB accuracy drill by nailing a bulls-eye on a target at 40 yards or something crazy like that.

I think they should have it a week after the Super Bowl in L.A. with a skills competition like they used to have with the QB accuracy and the longest throw along with obstacle course. Strong man competition. And one of my favorites fastest man competition. Used to love watching James Lofton, Willie Gault, Darryl Green and all the fastest guys battle it out for the title of fastest man in the NFL. Followed up by a Awards show for MVP, DPOY, and all the other awards. Make it a red carpet event it would be a huge draw much bigger than the Pro Bowl.

I would prefer to see it hosted in a warm climate on the main land, such as Miami, Tampa, Orlando, or even somewhere in California. This would give everyone an opportunity to attend. I have attended the Pro-Bowl in Hawaii and the one in Miami. I enjoyed both but thought Miami allowed football fans from afar, who could not afford to attend Super Bowl, an opportunity to attend Pro Bowl.

I agree that adding a skills competition like QB accuracy, longest throw with obstacle courses, strong man, and fastest man competition would make the Pro Bowl more exciting. These could be included in addition to the game.
