The NFL is partnering with the foundation for the late Arizona Cardinals safety Pat Tillman to create a scholarship in his name.

Tillman left the NFL to enlist in the Army in 2002 and was killed two years later while serving in Afghanistan.

The league will fund one of the scholarships in the Pat Tillman Foundation's military scholars program.

The Tillman Foundation supports educational opportunities for veterans and their families. The foundation’s Tillman Military Scholars program covers not only direct study?related expenses such as tuition, fees, and books, but also other needs such as room and board and child care.

There are currently 52 Tillman Military Scholars pursuing their education at every level, from college freshmen undergraduates to doctoral candidates.

With the creation of the NFL-Tillman Scholarship, the NFL will honor each year an individual who exemplifies Pat Tillman’s legacy of service.

The NFL has donated $700,000 to the Tilllman Foundation since it was founded in 2004.

"We are pleased to honor Pat Tillman through the creation of the NFL-Tillman Scholarship,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said. “He will always be a member of the NFL family and we are proud to honor him by assisting those who seek to continue his legacy of service.”
