San Francisco 49ers All-Pro outside linebacker Aldon Smith has been suspended for nine games for violating the NFL personal-conduct policy.

Smith was sentenced in July to 11 days of work release  after his arrest last year for drunk driving, his second since entering the NFL. It was his second such arrest since entering the NFL in 2011.

Three felony gun charges were reduced to misdemeanors.

Smith missed five games while spending time in a substance-abuse treatment center for alcohol issues.

He was arrested in April on an alleged fake bomb threat, but no charges were filed.

Smith has 42 career sacks.
