NFLPA files grievance for Jimmy Graham

The NFL Players Association has filed a grievance on behalf of New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham.

The grievance concerns whether he should be designated as a tight end or a wide receiver, which is up for debate considering how Graham is utilized in the Saints' offense as frequently split out as a wide receiver.

Graham was assigned a $7.05 million tight end franchise tag in March by the Saints with the NFL management council designating him as a tight end. The wide receiver franchise tag is $12.3 million, so it's a major gap.

Graham lined up split out or in the slot 67 percent of the snaps.

An arbitrator will hear the argument between the players' union and the management council.

A long-term deal for Graham could eventually be worked out.

Or the difference could be split as the Baltimore Ravens did years ago with outside linebacker Terrell Suggs before it could go to arbitration.
