*After NFL front office men had a chance to review combine numbers, they came away more impressed with Missouri outside linebacker Zaviar Gooden. He dominated his position group more than any other player, according to one exec. The numbers back him up. Gooden had the best time in 10 yard split (1.52), 20 yard split (2.50), 40 yard dash (4.4), 20 yard shuttle (4.18), 60 yard shuttle (11.28) and three cone drill (6.71). He has gone from a fourth round pick to a third or maybe a second.
*Twenty years after the Jerry Jones-Jimmy Johnson divorce, the two still are sniping at each other. They had a public exchange during the season in which Johnson refuted Jones’ claim that he has always been the architect of the Cowboys. We’re told Johnson also gave Jones the cold shoulder at a recent banquet. And Jones didn’t want to hire any of Johnson’s former cronies when he made staff changes after the season.
*We hear one of the reasons the Jets offense was so out of sync is the team spent an inordinate amount of time in training camp working on the wildcat, and then hardly ever used the scheme once the regular season came. There clearly was a disconnect between Rex Ryan and Tony Sparano, and that’s why Sparano now is in Oakland.
*When player groups watch tape of an opponent prior to a game, they often ttake a look at the opponents who player their positions as well. So who do many of the tight ends in the league think is the best at their position? Vernon Davis! Chatter amongst the TEs is that he can do everything required of the position with speed, power, and finesse. As one Pro Bowl TE put it, “He makes it look easier than anything I can do.”
*If there was position that was vulnerable for the 49ers, it was their secondary. The Ravens went after the 49ers’ defensive backs without fear and capitalized on it. As one AFC coach with ties to both Jim And John Harbaugh put it at the combine, “I expect the Niners will make it a priority to strengthen their secondary.”
