NFP reviews today's specialists workout

1. Caleb Sturgis, PK, Florida, Senior (5110, 184 and 5.00 E): On a day where many of the place kickers and punters struggled with consistency, Sturgis stood out as the most impressive specialist today. He clearly showed the strongest leg throughout the workout. On kickoffs, Sturgis was crushing the ball driving three out of the end-zone. His kickoffs had excellent hang-time, although on some it was tough to gauge a real hang-time as his kickoffs hit the uprights. Not only did he smash the ball on kickoffs, but he displayed excellent leg strength and accuracy on field goals hitting all three 50+ yarders.

2. Dustin Hopkins, PK, Florida State, Senior (6016, 186 and 5.15 E): While not as impressive as Sturgis, Hopkins also had a strong day today. Although his kicking motion was described as odd looking because he had the toes on his kicking foot noticeably upright. He also displayed good length and hang-time on his kickoffs with good placement. In addition to kicking off well, Hopkins leg strength and accuracy allowed him to hit all three 50+ yard kicks.

3. Bobby Cowan, PT, Idaho, Senior (6040, 239 and 5.05 E): As Sturgis stood out amongst the place kickers, Cowan was clearly the best punter today. Cowan showed off a strong leg driving the ball extremely well initially. He blasted three punts over 48 yards with excellent hang time to start, but then lost steam and did not drive the ball as well on the remainder of his punts. In the directional punting drill, Cowan was outstanding to the right nearly putting the ball into the barrel and while he was solid to the left he was not as impressive to that side.

4. Scott Kovanda, PT, Ball State, Senior (6060 E, 333 E and 4.95 E): Following close behind Cowan was Ball State’s Scott Kovanda, who also happens to be one of the few punters I have ever come across who was one of the Captains of his college team. Similar to Cowan, he blasted three outstanding punts with very good hang-time to begin workout and then fell off on the rest of his punts. He was strong punting to both sides in the directional punting drill.

5. Ryan Allen, PT, Louisiana Tech, Senior (6014, 229 and 5.00 E): Allen, who won the Ray Guy Award his final two seasons, had a disappointing workout today. While his leg strength was fine, he was not quick kicking the ball. He just looked slow in his punting motion and did not hit great punts.

6. Dylan Breeding, PT, Arkansas, Senior (6013, 211 and 4.69): Breeding struggled with accuracy and touch in the directional punting drill and was just average overall for the day.

7. Josh Hubner, PT, Arizona State, Senior (6040 E, 230 E and 5.00 E): Despite flashing a strong leg, Hubner was very up and down throughout today’s workout.
