Nate Burleson said he was distracted by pizza during accident

Detroit Lions wide receiver Nate Burleson hopes to return this season after suffering a broken left arm in unusual fashion: driving while trying to grab a pizza sliding around as he rode down the highway.

“Hopped on the freeway and multitasking,” Burleson told Detroit reporters. “I’ll be honest with you. I’m the king of that. Well, I was. Plugging in my phone, reaching for something and I had some pizzas sitting in my passenger’s seat.

“They started to slide. Hand full of pizza. Once I looked up, I felt I was close to a vehicle, tried to correct the car, overcorrected it and boom, right into the center median.”

Burleson broke two bones in his left forearm and totaled his car.

“Hopped out, sitting there and the police came,” Burleson said. “And once I looked down, I saw there was blood on my shirt. Didn’t know where it came from, but it was from my chin. That was from air bag. The impact was from my hand gripping the wheel.”

Burleson emphasized that he wasn't drinking and was wearing his seatbelt. He said he won't repeat his mistakes as a driver going forward.

“I don’t want to sound like a public-service announcement, but like I said, I usually multitask a lot when I’m driving,” he said. “And I’ve heard it all before: ‘Don’t do it.’

“But, yeah, that’ll be the last time that I do anything. I wasn’t on the phone, wasn’t texting, but just taking your eyes off the road briefly. And I do it all the time. Just this time bad results.”
