Larry Asante: No. 4, SS, 6-0, 215

Asante displays improved instincts from a year ago. He does a nice job reading the action in front of him and quickly closing on the ball. Showcases a good initial first step when asked to click and close underneath and takes good angles toward the ball. Generating good power on contact, he's consistently able to wrap up and bring his man to the ground. Displays good balance in his drop. Looks comfortable when asked to keep his feet under him and get out of his breaks. A ball-hawk in the secondary, Asante combines an intriguing blend of power, closing speed and instincts against the run and pass game.

He isn't the most explosive straight-line athlete and doesn't display much of a second gear. He looks like a 4.55 guy on tape, but he's able to make up for it because he consistently gets good jumps on the football and can quickly redirect out of his breaks. He looks like a guy who will be able to play in an NFL secondary as a strong safety. He should be able to nail down a starting role at some point in his career.

Grade: 6.6

Huh, I argued with someone about three weeks ago on Asante, & that is the exact word I used:"instincts." He reminds me a little of John Lynch, who lacked speed but got going while most safeties would still be perusing what was happening in front of them.

How can you call someone with 3 career int's a ballhawk?
