New-look Chiefs continue making upgrades

The Kansas City roster will look drastically different in 2013 than it did in 2012 thanks to a flurry of wheeling and dealing from the Chiefs front office over the past few weeks. And the organization is no doubt banking that these new additions to the roster will help to drastically improve on last season’s 2-14 record.

The latest transaction to take place in Kansas City comes on the defensive side of the football, as the Chiefs and free agent cornerback Sean Smith have reached an agreement on a three-year deal, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Financial particulars of the deal have not yet been released, but it’s safe to say that Smith wound up signing for less than he was hoping to land earlier in the week.

The move pairs Smith with another newly-acquired veteran cornerback in former Atlanta Falcon Dunta Robinson, who signed a three-year, $13.8 million deal with $3.9 million guaranteed last week, per Pro Football Talk. Robinson and Smith will now join a cornerback depth chart in Kansas City that already features Brandon Flowers and Javier Arenas.

One of the more physically imposing corners in the league at 6-3, 218 pounds, Smith was selected by the Miami Dolphins in the second round of the 2009 draft. In four years with Miami, the 25-year-old amassed five interceptions in 63 career games.

With Wes Welker recently signing on to become Peyton Manning’s newest weapon, it really can’t hurt to have an abundance of talent at the cornerback position when playing in the AFC West.
