Mark Ingram was taken in the first round of the 2011 draft, just a season after he won the illustrious Heisman Trophy at Alabama.
But his career hasn't taken off as expected. He's battled injuries and has played in a running back by committee scheme that has led to just 1,462 yards and 11 touchdowns over three seasons. One positive sign is that when he was available last season, he was able to run for 4.9 yards per carry.
However, the Saints decided not to pick up the fifth-year option on Ingram's contract, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune. He'll be set to enter free agency in 2015, barring the Saints and Ingram reaching an extension before next year's offseason.
Ingram will have a great chance to assert himself as New Orleans' running back for the future this season. He'll share time with Pierre Thomas and Khiry Robinson, and could emerge as the top back out of those three.
If not, then Ingram will likely be looking for a new team in 2015.
