Offseason might be right time for new contract for Brees

Reggie Bush knows he is going to have to rework his contract if he wants to remain with the New Orleans Saints in 2011.

Drew Brees would like a new contract too, a longterm pact that will keep him in New Orleans far into the future.

The MVP of Super Bowl XLIV said he is hopeful a deal can be brokered during the offseason.

“I think every player's always looking for an extension aren't they? That goes for you guys too," Brees said, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune. "I've got one year left (on my contract). And discussions have been ongoing. So we'll see how it plays out."

By waiting a little while, Brees will likely help himself. Tom Brady got a $72 million, four-year extension at the start of the season and now Peyton Manning is set to ring the cash register as he is coming out of contract. Letting Manning set the marketplace can only benefit Brees.

One natural speed bump is going to be the labor situation. Until a new collective bargaining agreement is reached, no team is going to write a massive contract. Then, the report states the Saints have 27 players headed to unrestricted free agency. That’s half the roster right there, creating a great deal of work for general manager Mickey Loomis and his staff.

"I would definitely want this to be done sooner than later. But I also understand the process. So we'll just wait and see," Brees said. “Now that the offseason's here, this is the time when you have an opportunity to think about those things and get those things accomplished. So I'm sure that we'll all be talking."
