OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Baltimore Ravens offensive tackle Michael is being honored by Congress with the Congresional Award Gold Medal in Washington, D.C., on June 23 as well as 251 other recipients.
Oher is being given the Horizon Award for his commitment to serving American's youth.
Oher's inspirational life story was featured in the movie and best-selling book, "The Blind Side."
Oher is being honored for how he "took the challenge and dedicated hundreds of hours to voluntary public service, personal development, physical fitness and expedition/exploration," the announcement stated.
Oher has been working with underprivileged youth in foster care.
"Having faced hardship in his own past, Oher serves as an inspiration to millions," the press release stated. "Despite the busy schedule of an NFL player, he has devoted much of his time outside of football to working with underprivileged youth—specifically those in foster care. In a recent visit to a school for troubled children, the Baltimore Ravens’ starting left tackle encouraged the youth to “keep fighting, keep overcoming adversity.”
