On wounded ankle: Some Favre news during the draft

Mariucci says left ankle still troubling undecided QB Brad Biggs

Here is a new twist in the will-Brett-return-or-not plot.

NFL Network analyst Steve Mariucci, who has a close relationship with Brett Favre dating back to his days as an assistant on Mike Holmgren’s staff in Green Bay, said that Favre is still dealing with the ankle injury he suffered in the Minnesota Vikings’ loss in the NFC Championship Game at New Orleans.

You know, one of the injuries that prompted Bus Cook to reportedly spread some pictures around the Internet of a wounded Favre. The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that Mariucci told WFAN radio in New York that he spoke to Favre “a few days ago” and that he is still struggling with the left ankle injury.

"He doesn't know yet," Mariucci said about a return of the purple No. 4. "He's trying to heal up. His body is recovered except for that ankle. That's not quite ready yet. It's an ankle that he had surgery on twice before and it's still pretty puffy. You remember he came out of that game with the ankle and went back in, but it's still swollen.
"He's trying to determine: Is his body telling him something here? Or is he going to be feeling better in due time. He still hasn't made up his mind, and the Vikings are not rushing him. That's what's a little bit crazy about it. I thought maybe they'd say, 'Listen, could you tell us by draft day please so we could determine where we're going to go?' But I don't think their draft needs are having to do with Brett. I think they are OK at quarterback. If he plays or if he doesn't play it doesn't matter. I think Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels will be there to play."

If the Vikings have doubts on Favre’s return, maybe they consider Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen with the second pick tonight. But Clausen would not likely be in a position to help them this season, and we’re not buying T-Jack or Rosenfels being capable of taking them to the promised land. The great thing here is we have Favre news during the middle of the draft. He’s one constant, that is for sure.

I honestly think guys like Mariucci are set up to get the national media to print stories about Favre. We should know better by now than to print every BF related comment prior to training camp.

He doesn't know yet because it's only April. Anyone expecting him to commit before July or August hasn't been paying attention. The guy has no other interests and nothing to keep him busy, so of course he'll be back.

I wouldn't be surprised though if the NFL network is filming a 'Being Brett Favre' show to counter the John Daly show on the Golf Channel.

Mariucci is just another Favre enabler and posse member. He wouldn' even be relevant if not for his association with Favre. I mean, who can even watch the NFL network, or more so, misses "Mooch's" insights?

What Mariucci is is neither here not there. Anyone who saw Favre after that N.O. game knows he was hurting big time. Mooch is just wrong about Sage ThrowsandFalls or T-Jack doing fine. That's a big drop off. The Vikes have been down that road. They will take Claussen, I am certain. Because I think this time it's not a no-brainer that Favre comes back.

Who cares - I don't want to see this old Grandpa playing football any longer. He disappointed us in Wisconsin because of his indicision and now he is pulling it again so he doesn't have to go to training camp. Get rid of the guy!

The funny thing about this - I don't think anyone cares if Favre comes back, because no one is falling for the drama anymore. His buddy Mariucci just had to say something to get Bretts name in the news. Everyone knows he is coming back... there is no drama and it's driving Favre nuts. He will play 2 more years with the Vikings and they will finally have to cut him, and then he will play for a team like the Lions and hang on as long as possible. It's kind of pathetic.

The dive watch is officially on. Now that the NFL has something going on, La Brette must get his name before the masses.

Brett doesn't read this stuff, and he certainly doesn't give a darn if some people don't like him or don't want him to play this season. Mariucci and the NFL know that most football fans DO want to know about Brett and to get an occasional update. I was very concerned when I heard Mooch talk about Brett's ankle. I know he's had surgery on it twice ... once was for bone chips, but I'm not sure what the other surgery was for. My concern is that, if it's bothering him that much and it's still swelling up after nearly 3 months since the injury, he should have it checked out by an orthopedic surgeon, if he hasn't already. If he needs surgery, he must have it soon, if he hopes to be able to play this season. I saw the pictures of his ankle, after the NFC game ... they were downright ugly ... I've never seen anything like that before. In any case, whether or not he chooses to play this year, he should have that ankle looked at and get treatment so he can go about his daily activities in comfort or play football or go hunting or whatever. I, for one, truly hope that #4 comes back for another year but, if he doesn't, he sure has left me and hundreds of thousands of other fans with some great memories! He's the best QB the Packers ever had (even Bart Starr agrees), and I will always admire him for his talent, his humor, his grit, and his love of the game. Thanks, Brett!

Packfan4 Agree with your post completely . I am a 74 year sports fan and alumni of Southern Mississippi and so proud to have watched Favre lead the Golden Eagles and I have enjoyed his exciting games in the NFL. I think Favre has the right to play in the NFL as long as he wants to. His right, His decision, not mine, not anyone else's. Personally I hope he gives it up now for his own body. If he were my son I would secretely hope he would not play but I would also advise him to do what he wants to......................

someone willing to drop down to the middle of the round. That could be fairly pricy. But you would think a team like the Rams, Buccaneers or Chiefs – all clubs with vast needs to fill – might entertain the right package.
