How good is Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith?
Well, most regard him as good, not great.
And, in an overstatement and show of public support and enthusiasm, offensive coordinator Doug Pederson regards Smith, the former San Francisco 49ers starter, as the top quarterback in the NFL.
"Ultimately, every team has to have a quarterback," Pederson told The Kansas City Star. "I think we have the best in the league."
That's fine that Pederson is confident in Smith as long as it doesn't place too much pressure on him.
This is the kind of optimism that should be fine, but it's interesting to hear what Pederson thinks.
Perhaps Smith is on the verge of a breakthrough.
"There are a lot of great ones, but over time, Alex has proven he can get it done," Pederson said. "He's a sharp guy, he brings a wealth of knowledge, he's experienced, he's a proven winner the last couple of years, and he needs a team to embrace him."
The Chiefs traded a second-round pick and a conditional selection that could become another second-rounder to acquire Smith from the 49ers.
Smith is a former top overall pick from Utah.
