Panthers cut Geoff Hangartner

The Carolina Panthers released starting veteran offensive lineman Geoff Hangartner today, a move that came as a surprise.

The Panthers are expected to move on with fourth-round rookie Edmund Kugbila at right guard unless they can work out a deal with Travelle Wharton. So far, the veteran hasn't been willing to come down on his price.

“I was definitely surprised,” Hangartner told the Charlotte Observer. “I knew there was competition in camp and I was going to have to have a good camp. But I definitely didn’t see getting released at this time.”

Hangartner was due a $1.575 million base salary this season.

Hangartner was a four-game starter last season, but didn't have a sterling season.

Admittedly.

“I didn’t have my best year last year, but I definitely was a little blindsided by the move because I can play center and guard,” Hangartner said.
