The Carolina Panthers granted coach Ron Rivera a three-year contract extension, rewarding him for making the playoffs.

Rivera is now under contract through the 2017 season.

He was heading into the final year of his contract.

The Panthers went 12-4 and won the NFC South divison last season following a 1-3 start.

He went 13-19 in his first two seasons as head coach.

“The improvement of our team has been reflected in the progress of the record over the last three seasons under Ron, and we look forward to building upon that foundation,” Panthers owner Jerry Richardson said in a statement.
