The Carolina Panthers are talking with defensive end Greg Hardy about trying to hammer out a contract extension, according to the Charlotte Observer and ESPN.

Hardy recorded a career-high 11 sacks and 23 quarterback pressures last season.

He's due a $1.35 million salary in the last year of his original rookie deal.

The Panthers have salary-cap room, between $12 million and $13 million under the NFL limit of $123 million.

Working in tandem with Charles Johnson, whom the Panthers signed to a six-year, $76 million deal in 2011, Hardy combine with Johnson for 23 1/2 sacks last season.
