Patrick Peterson calls Richard Sherman a ‘Cover 3 corner’

Arizona Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson appears ready to start a rivalry with a famiiar NFC West foe.

Speaking to radio station KMVP-FM, Peterson, whether intentional or not, downplayed Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman's statistics as a cornerback. Though Sherman led the league with eight interceptions, Peterson said it was easier for the Seattle corner to get those stats within their scheme.

"I don't want to get in a debate as far as stats that he has and things like that," Peterson said. "Obviously his job is definitely much easier than mine. But if you look at their scheme and at our scheme, he's a Cover 3 corner. Period."

Peterson took it a step further, saying he's not the lockdown guy others make him out to be.

"A lot of guys say he's a shutdown corner," Peterson said. "But if you look at film and guys who understand the game, go back and look at film and see how his defense is. I believe that if you put him in our system, I don't believe he'll be able to last, honestly. Because I actually do much more than he is (doing)."

Those are fighting words, and you can bet Sherman will respond in some fashion. He lives for those verbal battles and will respond at some point, you can count on that.

As for Peterson, if he didn't want to start a debate based on Sherman's stats, he shouldn't have said anything. But NFL fans are likely glad he did, since a war of words should ensue leading up to the first time the Cardinals and Seahawks meet this season.
