The New England Patriots are interested in negotiating a contract extension for All-Pro safety Devin McCourty, according to multiple reports.
It's in a preliminary stage.
McCourty is carrying a $5.1 million salary-cap figure for 2014.
McCourty is a former first-round draft pick from Rutgers.
He has played cornerback and safety, but has hit stride at safety since shifting to that position.
If the Patriots use the franchise tag on McCourty, it would cost them $8.433 million.
