Aaron Hernandez hasn't yet been released from custody, but he has been released by the New England Patriots.

The Patriots are essentially washing their hands of the star tight end, who was arrested this morning in connection with the homicide investigation into the death of Odin Lloyd last week. Hernandez was an acquaintance of Lloyd's and the two were together in the hours before Lloyd was killed.

Police have not yet revealed what charges Hernandez faces from his arrest, but the Patriots issued the following statement shortly after the arrest was made: "A young man was murdered last week and we extend our sympathies to the family and friends who mourn his loss. Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation. We realize that law enforcement investigations into this matter are ongoing. We support their efforts and respect the process. At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do.”
