Patriots try out Jake Ballard, four others

Tight end worked out before signing with Cardinals Aaron Wilson

The New England Patriots worked out tight end Jake Ballard prior to him signing Monday with the Arizona Cardinals, according to a league source.

The Patriots also worked out defensive end Justin Francis, who was with them in training camp before being waived-injured and cut from injured reserve

The Patriots worked out former Houston Texans running back Cierre Wood, who was cut after violating team rules after allegedly using marijuana. Wood has also worked out for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

New England worked out linebacker Marcus Dowtin, who has previous stints with the New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills.

They also worked out former Cincinnati Bengals and Denver Broncos wide receiver Greg Orton.
