Cleveland Browns linebacker Paul Kruger said he'll leave the starting quarterback decision to the coaching staff.
But that doesn't mean he's without an opinion on who should start. Put Kruger in Brian Hoyer's camp, thanks to Hoyer's three-game stretch that saw him go for 615 yards and five touchdowns, with Cleveland going 3-0.
“Me personally, I mean obviously that’s up to the staff and coaches so they’ll make that decision,” Kruger told radio station 1320 KFAN. “But in my mind, [Brian] Hoyer’s the guy. Hoyer came in, won us [three] games, unfortunately got hurt. But the guy was on fire when he was healthy. He’s proven himself at different levels and has worked extremely hard.”
Hoyer was injured in his third start early against Buffalo, though the Browns were able to hold on for a win. He's competing with rookie and former Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel for the starting job.
Not much should be made of these comments, other than Hoyer has some friends in the locker room. No player is going to side with a rookie at this stage of the offseason. If the quarterback has friends, they'll stick up for him. If he doesn't, the player will deflect his answer to his coach.
