Matt Hasselbeck was not listed on the injury report for the Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday but coach Pete Carroll isn’t showing his hand when it comes to who he’ll pick to be his starting quarterback for Saturday’s wild-card showdown with the New Orleans Saints at Qwest Field.
Hasselbeck sat out the regular-season finale with the St. Louis Rams as he was suffering from a hip injury. Charlie Whitehurst replaced him and now Carroll will pick between the two for the NFC West champions.
“At this point there's no point to say anything more about it from my perspective," Carroll said, according to the Seattle Times. "You may not think so, but we're going to keep going, and I'm pleased that we're in the position we're in there."
Carroll was coy when asked if Hasselbeck is 100 percent healthy. He wouldn’t say if he’s going to take the decision all the way up until game time.
“I'll leave it open," Carroll said. "We'll figure it out. I want to get all the days in here. Each day is important for us to see how we're doing, to see how Charlie is doing. Just figure out where it is. I feel very comfortable with what we're doing as far as their turns and reps. Both quarterbacks are dead into this as much as they can be, and we'll have them both available. They both will be ready to play football so that's good, and we'll figure who's going to start in a little bit."
If Hasselbeck is healthy, you would figure he is the choice. He has not played particularly well this season, but Whitehurst was uneven in the win over the Rams that got the Seahawks into the playoffs at 7-9. Most figure Hasselbeck would provide the best opportunity to engineer an upset against the heavily favored Saints.
