Charlie Whitehurst may be set for this season as the backup to Matt Hasselbeck, a job that could lead to playing time if the recent past is an indicator.

But Percy Allen of the Seattle Times raises the question of whether or not Whitehurst can be viewed as a longterm option for the Seattle Seahawks. Of course, he can only use the first three games of the preseason for context, but it’s been awful patchy.

A career No. 3 with the San Diego Chargers, he’s getting more exposure now than he ever has.

“I knew that this is what preseason is about,” Whitehurst told Allen. “There's some good and some bad. You try to keep a level head.”

J.P. Losman is in the mix and he has more NFL experience. The biggest thing for Whitehurst is cutting down on turnovers. He threw for 214 yards and two touchdowns in the preseason opener and then had three picks and one touchdown in his next two games.

Still, there is something about Whitehurst that led the Seahawks to pursue him and they have a belief that he can and will be developed. Coach Pete Carroll said he’s had a very successful preseason. We’ll see if Hasselbeck can remain healthy this season and keep Whitehurst on the bench.
