Prospects: Ten-yard split studs and duds

Measuring first-step explosion of fastest, and slowest, draft prospects. Wes Bunting

After posting the 10-yard splits of some of the draft’s top potential pass rushers on Monday, I got a ton of emails, comments and requests for a look at the rest of the top 10-yard splits at positions across the board. Here’s a breakdown of the top five and bottom five split times at each position that I deemed relevant.

The 10-yard split is a great indicator of a prospect’s initial burst and explosion out of his stance, and in my opinion it does a much better job measuring overall football speed than the 40-yard dash since most NFL players are asked to play in 10-yard increments.

Remember, measuring a prospect’s 10-yard split does not guarantee success at the next level. It’s just another tool used to evaluate the first-step explosion a player is capable of producing.

Note: All times where recorded at this year’s NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

As fast as spiller obviously is, his low speed shake and bakes that leave grown men collapsed on the ground are hard to put a number on.

So does that mean that Terrance Cody had a faster 10 yard split than those DE's, or are the DT's in another category.

If Cody's 10 yard split was faster than those guys, then thats impressive.

Do you have his 10 yard split?

Wes,

Where can one find all the 10 yard split results? A guy I am very interested in is Daniel Teo-Nesheim. His drill results were similar to Clay Matthews and I think Matthews and his drill results are the measureables for a successful 3-4 linebacker. I realize character and intangiables have a lot to do with it and Teo-Nesheim seems to have what can not be measured.

Minnesota ILB Lee Campbell's 10 yard split at the Combine was 1.60. Not sure where you got the 1.74. That 14/100ths of a second makes a big difference.

I can think of a team that has a need at tight end and has some experience converting Kent State players to other positions at which they will be successful at? Can you say Julian Edelman. This guy sounds perfect for The Genius and the Patriots.

The quality score seems to me like it would be pretty straightforward but I’ve seen a few sites get their QS knocked down for unknown reasons...
