There is something about the punters in the Bay Area.

Shane Lechler of the Oakland Raiders has long been regarded as the best in the league. But Andy Lee, across the Bay with the 49ers, is not far behind.

Now, Lee won’t trail by much when it comes to pay. The 49ers have signed Lee to a six-year contract extension, according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.

Andy has established himself as one of the top players in the game at his position,” general manager Trent Baalke said. “He is a valued member of our organization and community. As we stated earlier this year, it is our objective to keep the core of this team together long term, and this is just another step in that direction."

The 29-year-old Lee was to earn $1 million this season. Now, he’s expected to have a handsome raise and he could come close to Lechler, who earns an average of almost $4 million per season.
