It appears the knee injury Keith Smith suffered in Purdue’s win over Western Illinois Saturday will end the fifth-year senior’s season.

According to Kenneth Gray, the Boilermaker receiver’s former high school coach at Shoemaker High School in Fort Hood, Texas, Smith told him that he tore the ACL and MCL in his right knee.

Keith SmithICONLosing WR Keith Smith is a tough blow for the Purdue offense.

The 6-2, 226-pounder went to the locker room on a cart during Saturday’s game but later returned to the sideline on crutches. Gray talked with Smith on Saturday night.

“He was already handling it pretty well," Gray said. "It's one of those hurdles he'll have to overcome. He told me they were going to cast it, do an MRI on it and on (Tuesday), they were going to start some rehab before the surgery."

Smith was the conference’s leading receiver in ‘09, when he caught 91 passes for 1,100 yards and six scores. This season, he was the Boilermakers’ leading receiver with 18 catches for 123 yards.

After Smith, there is serious dropoff on this unit. Former quarterback Justin Siller will have to continue to develop a good rapport with quarterback Robert Marve, as Purdue will be desperate to make up for the production lost with Smith’s injury.
