Robert Griffin III was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week for his role in the Washington Redskins’ 40-32 upset of the New Orleans Saints.
The rookie quarterback made a smashing debut on Sunday. But he will also be hearing from the NFL about an apparel issue. Darren Rovell of ESPN.com reports that Griffin covered the Nike swoosh logo on an undershirt before the game. He wrote the word “Heart” on the left side of his undershirt. The H was made large enough to obscure the logo.
Why? Griffin has a marketing deal with adidas.
"It won't happen again," NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told Rovell.
Nike is in the first year of its new apparel deal with the NFL. The violation was only visible in pregame and Griffin is not likely to be fined. Not this time.
