The Heisman Trophy winners from the past two years are preparing to square off on Sunday as the Washington Redskins will host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

Since he entered the draft, so many have compared Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III to Cam Newton, who was the NFL’s offensive rookie of the year last season. Griffin has taken the league by storm just like Newton did, with his amazing array of skills. Barring something unexpected, Griffin should win the same award this year as well.

But Griffin isn’t interested in being compared to Newton.

I’d rather be compared to an Aaron Rodgers or a guy like that,” Griffin said Wednesday, according to Rich Campbell of the Washington Times, “someone who has won Super Bowls.”

To be accurate, Rodgers has won a Super Bowl, but the point is valid. Griffin wants to be considered among the NFL’s elite at the position and quarterback, more so than any other position, is judged by Lombardi Trophies.

As Campbell pointed out, Griffin wasn’t taking an intentional swipe at Newton. Both quarterbacks are superior athletes with the ability to hurt opposing defenses by tucking the ball and running. We’ll see how their first meeting on the gridiron goes Sunday.
