Rams, Redskins announce to world they’ve made a deal

It’s as official as it can be now with the St. Louis Rams and Washington Redskins forced to wait until the start of the new league year Tuesday afternoon to execute their blockbuster trade.

Until that point, a joint statement from general managers Les Snead and Bruce Allen, of the Rams and Redskins, respectively, will have to do.

Here it is:

“In order to execute each of our club’s plans for free agency and the upcoming draft, we have agreed to a trade between our two teams for the 2nd pick in the 2012 draft. We will submit this trade to the NFL for approval.”

When the trade goes through Tuesday afternoon, the Redskins will hold the No. 2 overall pick in the draft. For that pick, the Rams collected quite a bounty. They will receive the 6th overall pick from the Redskins, a second-round draft pick in 2012 and first-round picks in 2013 and 2014.

The Redskins are hopeful the rebuilding process with coach Mike Shanahan can begin in earnest now after they use the pick on Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III. They’re hoping those picks in ’13 and ’14 are not Top-10 selections. We’ll see about that.
