Michael Sam became a part of NFL history Saturday evening.
The St. Louis Rams drafted the 2013 SEC co-defensive player of the year with the 249th overall pick in the seventh round of this year's draft. This makes Sam the first openly gay player ever drafted in the league.
Sam had a remarkable career at Missouri, establishing himself as a team leader with the Tigers. Sam tallied 11.5 sacks this past season, and had 18.5 in his career.
Sam was a projected mid-round pick until a poor showing at the NFL combine dropped his stock. He did make up for it with an improved performance at his Pro Day.
Sam revealed he was gay in interviews with ESPN and the New York Times early this offseason.
