ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Baltimore Ravens have signed veteran defensive lineman Cory Redding to a two-year contract.
The Ravens envision Redding operating as the replacement for Dwan Edwards at left defensive end. Team officials like Redding's versatility and ability to rush the passer.
"This will sound a little like a broken record, but Cory is a guy who plays like a Raven,” general manager Ozzie Newsome said in a statement. “He hustles, he plays with intelligence, and he can play multiple positions like many of our defensive players.
"He’s been a starter at both inside tackle and defensive end. And I am sure our coaches will use him in both positions
Edwards recently signed a four-year, $18 million contract with the Buffalo Bills.
Redding, 29, recorded 20 tackles and two sacks last season.
"We're excited about Cory," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said today at the Ritz-Carlton. "He fits us. He really plays with a high motor. He plays with great energy, and a sideline to sideline type of a player. He's really excited to be a Raven. I think in our defense he'll have a chance to really blossom.
"He can rush from the inside, rush from the outside. He can probably even play the rush end position, which is where we put Dwan Edwards at times on first down last year. I think he's a similar player to Dwan. Obviously, Dwan had a great year for us. We're hoping he fills that spot for us."
He played in 15 games with three starts last season for the Seattle Seahawks.
The 6-foot-4, 295-pounder has registered 220 career tackles and 18 sacks.
Before playing for Seattle, Redding played for the Detroit Lions for six seasons.
Reddin played collegiately at the University of Texas.

Watch out for this team next season. They were tough to begin with with a great ground game and good defense. With Boldin on O and Redding added, they could have something special. Did Ed Reed retire or is he still going to play? This is a team I could have as my AFC favorite they know how to get it done against the Colts - even though I didn't think it should have taken so long for someone to finally get it done against them, thanks NO - good QB, great running back, angry hostile D.
