Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III will return as the starter in 2014, according to offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan.

Backup quarterback Kirk Cousins is set to start the next three games, but Griffin will regain his job next season.

"It's ridiculous to act like this is a quarterback competition," Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said. "Robert just had one of the best years as a rookie in NFL history. He didn't have that this year. We didn't do that again this year. To give up on him like that and say play someone else, that's fun for people to talk about but that hasn't entered my brain and it's not a possibility or option."

Griffin was benched for the final three games by coach Mike Shanahan. Shanahan said it's a precautionary measure to protect Griffin's surgically-repaired right knee.

Of course, it's unclear if Mike Shanahan will be back next season.

"We made a decision a long time ago that Robert is our quarterback," Mike Shanahan said. "He's our quarterback of the future. We made this decision based on what we think is best for him, and it could be best for our organization. If he lights it up, we've got a lot of options with Kirk. I hope that's what happens."
