The Redskins released defensive end Phillip Merling and kicker John Potter, coach Mike Shanahan told reporters Tuesday.

The moves give the Redskins two extra spots for the week as defensive end Jarvis Jenkins and outside linebacker Rob Jackson return from suspensions. However, Jenkins and Jackson won't be counted against the 53-man roster until Monday.

For players returning after a suspension, the NFL grants a one-week roster exemption. The Redskins could find two players for this one week if they felt the need.
