Brandon Meriweather escaped serious injury in the second preseason game when he left Soldier Field with a knee sprain.

The Washington Redskins strong safety was sidelined for the remainder of the preseason following the Aug. 18 injury. But the good news was he would be ready for the start of the season. Not any more. Redskins coach Mike Shanahan delivered bad news today when he announced Meriweather will miss two to four games after suffering a sprained MCL and PCL after landing awkwardly in practice.

So, DeJon Gomes is expected to start alongside Madieu Williams at safety for the Redskins, who open their season on Sunday in New Orleans against the high-powered Saints. Tanard Jackson was suspended indefinitely by the NFL for violation of the league’s substance abuse policy last week.
