Report: 49ers, Jim Harbaugh to part ways quickly after season-finale

The 49ers are expected to end their relationship with coach Jim Harbaugh in some fashion shortly after the season ends, according to FOX Sports' Jay Glazer.

It's been known for some time that Harbaugh wouldn't be back with the 49ers. But the questions left unanswered, to this point, have been when and where will he go? It appears those answers are coming into form.

Glazer reports that the 49ers are expected to be done with Harbaugh —whether he quits or is fired — within 24 to 48 hours of San Francisco's final game against the Cardinals. Given this scenario, the chances of trading Harbaugh to another NFL team appear extremely unlikely, since the 49ers would want to hold onto him longer to see if they could work something out.

That means the chances of Harbaugh returning to his alma mater Michigan appear greater than they've ever been. It seems crazy for a coach that's been to three NFC Championship Games and one Super Bowl to go back to coaching in college. But recent reports have linked Harbaugh returning to Michigan, which appears to have even more traction at this time.
