The San Francisco 49ers have had nothing public to say about the exit of general manager Scot McCloughan, but the plan the organization is putting in place with the draft less than five weeks away is beginning to come to light.

Trent Baalke, the Niners director of player personnel, will take the lead for the draft, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. It is a critical period for San Francisco as it holds the 13th and 17th overall selections in the first round, an opportunity for the team to make a big step forward in an NFC West that is expected to be wide open.

The timing of McCloughan’s exit is a head scratcher and perhaps some answers will come out from the owners meeting, which begin in Orlando, Fla., on Sunday. What’s interesting is McCloughan’s brother David has a role in the team’s college scouting department too.

Baalke has been with the 49ers for six seasons and is in his third year in his current position. His background is in college scouting and he handled the West Region for the club before being promoted. Previously, he was a national scout for the Washington Redskins and he also held a scouting gig with the New York Jets.

What the plan will be for a general manager in the future in San Francisco remains to be seen. First, the team needs to get through the draft.

The Redskins have been focusing on the offensive line in their tempered approach to free agency and Sims could add some depth to a unit that sorely lacked it last season. Sims played for the 49ers last season, appearing in all 16 games and making seven starts, but the Redskins have line coach Chris Foerster, who came from San Francisco so there is a level of familiarity for him.
