The Arizona Cardinals have interest in Alex Smith but it is difficult to imagine the San Francisco 49ers will have matching interest in helping out an NFC West rival.
The 49ers figure to be able to generate interest from at least a small handful of clubs in the quarterback, and most have linked the Kansas City Chiefs to Smith.
But Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic reports that the Cardinals are “exploring the possibility” of putting together a deal for Smith. The Cardinals need to upgrade the position after swinging and missing in a major trade for Kevin Kolb two years ago. But that is precisely why the Niners will look anywhere else to move Smith, who was replaced by Colin Kaepernick midway through this past season.
The Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguars have also been mentioned as possible destinations for Smith. In order to maximize return for Smith, the Niners will need multiple bidders so for that reason perhaps they will entertain calls from the Cardinals.
Arizona has to be a serious longshot to land Smith.
