The Arizona Cardinals have sent a pretty clear message to rookie first-round draft pick Dan Williams in the fourth week of his NFL career.
He better take getting in shape seriously, or he’s not going to last long.
Mike Jurecki of XTRA Sports 910 in Phoenix reports that the Cardinals will deactivate Williams on Sunday for the team’s game at San Diego. Per Jurecki, Gabe Watson will play nose tackle in Williams’ place.
The 6-2, 327-pound Williams is apparently something north of 327. Weight issues seem to crop up in Arizona. Guard Deuce Lutui reached 396 pounds during the offseason. The Cardinals can fine Williams for missing his target weight each week.
That’s an expensive proposition for players as they are fined per pound they are over. Given that Williams will be benched this week, the guess here is he’s more than a few pounds over.
