The Minnesota Vikings reached a contract extension with Brad Childress that will keep the coach with the team through the 2013 season, a source told ESPN.com Thursday.

Financial terms weren't immediately available but it is believed to be between $4 million and $5 million a year, the source said. In 2006, Childress signed a five-year, $10 million contract, which was scheduled to expire after the 2010 season.

The Vikings are off to an 8-1 start with Brett Favre at quarterback. His record in Minnesota is 32-2. The Vikings made the playoffs last year and are trying to get the top seed in the NFC.

Both sides have been working on a deal for the past several months. The agreement came together Thursday morning.

As a team, the Vikings are loaded. They have 22 players on their roster who are in the top five in fan voting for the Pro Bowl.

A Chilly forecast for the NFC North. Congrats, let's see how you guys handle success. Good luck in continuing the great play this season.

I love how these teams always jump the gun on these coach signings. Great year for Childress so far but lets face it, he has to at least get to the SuperBowl. If he does not then it is just another good season. These guys are never going to be better than they are right now, this season. Childress was tenuous coming into the season but Favre has saved him. They should have waited till the season is over. It is kind of like Lovie Smith a few years ago, the Bears made the Super Bowl, Lovie got his extension and were never heard from again. It isn't like Childress would be worth more than what they are paying him now.

Childress really does not have the greatest reputation as a play caller. Favre, Peterson, Rice and Harven have saved him. The first two were expected but the next two have really made the season a special one

If he wants to see more than a couple of years of that contract, they'd better draft a good young quarterback next year and, hopefully, develop him under Favre. Otherwise it's back to mediocrity.

Chilly's been better with clock management and challenges this year, the players seem to like him and play for him. He's by no means the elite in the league, but has fixed some of those issues he struggled with the previous 2 years. 4 mill seems fair, 5 would be a little high.

The toughest team they've beat this year is the 5-4 Packers........

Must be the NFL's easiest schedule this far. Way to jump the gun though, like it.
