The report earlier this afternoon by Mike Jurecki that Arizona Cardinals defensive tackle Darnell Dockett has been fined six figures for his blowup with teammate Kerry Rhodes last Sunday was on the mark.
The Cardinals have fined Dockett $200,000 for conduct detrimental to the team reports NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport, confirming the previous report from Jurecki and sending Dockett running for help from the NFLPA.
“Thank God for the @nflpa that's all I got to say... "I ain't got no worries,” Dockett wrote on his Twitter account this evening.
Rhodes has said that Dockett didn’t spit on him at the end of the Cardinals’ 7-6 loss to the New York Jets. Whatever he did, the team deemed it serious and now Dockett has been fined a substantial amount of money.
“Yes, we had a disagreement on the field but, no he did NOT spit in my face," Rhodes said earlier in the week in a statement released by the club. "I'm not going to get into all the details because I think those are things you keep within the team. But Darnell and I talked after the game, we're both moving on and I'll leave it at that."
The steep nature of the fine makes it likely that Dockett’s issues expanded beyond Rhodes and that he did not follow directions from the coaching staff. Dockett has said folks were looking for "escape goats" in the midst of the Cardinals' eight-game losing streak. We’ll see what direction this heads.
