Now we have an explanation that makes perfect sense for why Deuce Lutui took every last minute this offseason to sign his tender as a restricted free agent.
Lutui apparently was going in circles through the drive-thru at his favorite fast food joint and couldn’t get out of the loop. That’s the conclusion we’ve drawn anyway as Lutui has checked in at 396 pounds with the Arizona Cardinals, according to the Twitter account of Mike Jurecki of XTRA 910 AM in Phoenix.
Lutui switched agents in the offseason and forgot to hire a trainer, all the while losing his starting job when the Cardinals plucked Alan Faneca up off the street. The Cardinals listed Lutui at 6-4, 338 pounds last season. He was probably a little bigger than that, but not 396. Now, he’s got his work cut out for him before the Cardinals report to training camp in Flagstaff, Ariz., where we suggest Lutui avoid Bun Huggers, a burger joint we tried in Flagstaff the last time we were there for a Northern Arizona Lumberjacks game in 1994 or 1995.
From a practical standpoint, Lutui needs to drop the weight in order to pass his physical at the start of training camp. Otherwise, the Cardinals could fail him and place him on the non-football injury list. He could be forced to shed the weight before he's removed from NFI and allowed to participate in practice. It's exactly what the Chicago Bears did last summer with defensive tackle Marcus Harrison when he showed up for camp out of shape.
