With Oregon still in hot water with the NCAA, the popular opinion of many NFL personnel is that Oregon head coach Chip Kelly is ready to move onto the next level, especially because he was close to becoming head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last offseason.
US PRESSWIREChip Kelly will remain a hot target of NFL executives this offseason.
On Friday's episode of NFL Network's "Around the League," NFL.com's Albert Breer reported that Kelly is expected to have multiple suitors, including the Philadelphia Eagles and Carolina Panthers as "likely" options. Of course, Andy Reid is in hot water in Philly, and many believe that Ron Rivera will lose his job in Carolina because there will be a new general manager in town.
Landing a job with the Panthers would have to be intriguing for Kelly, considering Cam Newton is entrenched as the starting quarterback. Newton running the high-octane, zone-read game certainly has to excite Panther fans despite questions of how effective Kelly's up-tempo offense would work on a down-to-down basis. Of course, Newton almost single-handedly prevented Kelly from winning the 2010 BCS national championship.
Breer also reported that Northwestern's Pat Fitzgerald, Washington's Steve Sarkisian and Syracuse's Doug Marrone could interest some NFL teams looking for a head-coaching change. It is unlikely that Fitzgerald and Sarkisian would seriously entertain offers, however, after turning down interviews in St. Louis last year.
