With 11 draft picks now after some wheeling and dealing, the Philadelphia Eagles are set up to draft, well, how about a quarterback?
Geoff Mosher of the Wilmington News Journal reports that the team is inclined to find a quarterback somewhere in the draft, especially with only two on the roster right now and rumors that the Eagles are working to trade Michael Vick. Wanting to trade Vick and being able to trade him could be two different things.
The Eagles have been doing their homework on quarterbacks and even sent offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg to see Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford throw. They have also done work on John Skelton of Fordham and seem to be linked, right or wrong, to Florida’s Tim Tebow.
Here’s the problem with the Eagles drafting a quarterback this year: If they do that, Vick will likely be the primary backup to Kevin Kolb. Some have suggested that is why Andy Reid is seeking to trade him in the first place. Do they need a developmental passer now that they are turning the offense over to Kolb? It never hurts to be bringing a young quarterback along, but they might be more comfortable doing that if they had a polished backup on board like Marc Bulger or perhaps Jeff Garcia.
Because the Eagles have 11 picks, they can go after a player they like and know that they will be able to cover other needs with the volume of picks they have. Stay tuned.
