Report: Fred Taylor likely to miss rest of season

Fragile Fred might not be back to carry the ball for the New England Patriots this season.

Given a nickname he probably doesn’t deserve, Fred Taylor faces the prospect of missing the final 12 games of the season after undergoing surgery on his right ankle today for what was termed “severe ligament damage,’’ according to Christopher Gasper of the Boston Globe.

Taylor, who is leading the Patriots in rushing, suffered an eversion ankle sprain, according to Gasper, meaning he rolled his ankle to the outside in Sunday’s victory over Baltimore. He has 11,472 career rushing yards, 15th on the league’s all-time lis after recently passing John Riggins, but has missed 11 games since 2003, the last time he went through a season playing in all 16 games.

Without Taylor, the Patriots will have to divide their running game between Sammy Morris, Laurence Maroney, Kevin Faulk and BenJarvus Green-Ellis.
