The Jaguars surprised the rest of the NFL with its first-round pick, taking Central Florida quarterback Blake Bortles with the third overall pick.

But how much did Jacksonville covet Bortles? According to an on-air report from ESPN's Britt McHenry, the Jaguars were going to take Bortles even if Jadeveon Clowney was available at No. 3. Of course, Clowney was taken first overall by the Texans.

This is certainly believable given that Buffalo outside linebacker Khalil Mack was available and the Jaguars elected to pass in order to take Bortles.

Still, the Jaguars plan for 2014 is for Chad Henne to start while Bortles develops. Therefore, it's plausible the Jaguars are certainly putting all their eggs in on Bortles for the long-term future, signaling the organization's awareness that turning this team into a winner will take years, not months.
