The speculation about Peyton Manning turned out to be correct, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen tweet, who tweeted that the Colts star quarterback underwent surgery this morning for a cervical fusion.

According to the report, Manning will be out at least 2-3 months as he recovers from the procedure. There is no word yet on whether the Colts quarterback will be placed on injured reserve and miss the entire season, or if the Colts will try to give him the chance to get back on the field sometime in 2011.

Had they not taken him off the physically unable to perform list, they could have bought themselves time to decide on Manning's fate without using a roster spot on him.

Manning's absence certainly changes the dynamic of the AFC South, where the Colts have been kingpins for years, winning all but two titles since the division's inception in 2002.

The Colts now find themselves going forward with Kerry Collins for the long haul, rather than just the short term as many had speculation.

And finally, kudos to the two radio station hosts in Indianapolis who put out the news on Twitter that their sources were telling them that Manning needed another procedure and that it could be season-ending. Sometimes, the little guys do get the scoop.
